Innovation

Make solar energy economical. We are heading in the right direction.

Through its visionary mindset and actions, Würth Solar has become the leading innovator in CIS technology for photovoltaic energy generation.

We were the first company in the solar industry to implement large-scale production of CIS modules. The first factory in the world for large-scale serial production of CIS modules – CISfab in Schwäbisch Hall, Germany – was opened in autumn 2006.

Researching for success

Based on the latest research results we are continuously working on ways of expanding our leading innovative position. One sign of our determination was the foundation of Würth Elektronik Research in 2006. Here, engineers and scientists are working to increase the efficiency and energy yield of CIS modules.

The Würth Elektronik Research are examining the use of new substrates to replace the glass that is used at present. Among other things they are focussing on flexible substrates, such as PE films and metal foils. Another declared objective is to optimise the production technology in order to minimise manufacturing costs – an important step towards making solar energy economical.

Cooperation with external partners, preferentially the Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg Zentrum für Sonnenenergie- und Wasserstoff Forschung Baden-Württemberg (ZSW), occurs particularly during pre-development stages.

The official Würth Elektronik Research headquarters are in Stuttgart, giving the benefit of physical proximity to the development partner ZSW Stuttgart.
Würth Elektronik Research also provides support for and optimization of day-to-day production at the Würth Solar and CISfab production sites in Schwäbisch Hall.

Efficient solar modules

GeneCIS modules from Würth Solar achieve outstanding energy yields. The reason for this is the ability of the GeneCIS modules to generate relatively high yields even in high temperatures that can occur in our latitudes in early summer or in case of partial shading – e.g. due to dormers.
